Jon Van Zyle was born November 9th, 1942 in Petoskey, Michigan and taught himself to paint in his childhood. After working a series of jobs throughout his twenties he finally decided to become a naturalistic wildlife artist full time in 1972. He moved to Alaska to gain inspiration, and became enamored with the famous Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race between Anchorage and Nome, twice completing the 1049 mile trek on his own. In 1979 he was made the official Iditarod artist, a distinction he holds to this day, and together with his wife, artist Jona Van Zyle, they continue to make art together at their home studio near Eagle River, exhibiting both together and separately all over the world and currently setting up the Van Zyle Endowment of the Arts to help rising Alaskan artists study and find success themselves.
