Johnny Friedlaender (1912–1992) was a German-born French artist celebrated for his pioneering work in aquatint etching. Born Gotthard Joachim Friedlaender in Pless, Silesia (now Pszczyna, Poland), he studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Breslau under Otto Mueller. After fleeing Nazi persecution, he settled in Paris in 1937, where he became a central figure in the New School of Paris. Friedlaender's work, characterized by abstract compositions infused with poetic and surreal elements, earned him international acclaim. He was a member of the Salon de Mai and exhibited widely in Europe, Japan, and the United States. In 1952, he became a naturalized French citizen. Throughout his career, Friedlaender mentored many artists in his Paris studio and received numerous accolades, including the Lovis Corinth Prize and the Officier des Arts et des Lettres. His legacy endures through his innovative contributions to printmaking and his influence on subsequent generations of artists.
