John Timothy Hall was born in Mount Lebanon Township, a suburb of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, in 1947. Both of his parents were artists who introduced him to painting and encouraged him from a young age. While still in elementary school he took advanced art courses at Mount Lebanon High School, mastering drawing with pencil and pen. In 1963, at the age of 16, he won the Regional Artists Association award and used the prize money to travel Europe for the summer, visiting galleries and museums and immersing himself in Western traditions. In his senior year he audited art classes at the Carnegie Museum in Pittsburgh, before attending Ohio University studying fine art. Realizing that an art degree specializing in one field was not what he wanted, he transferred to the University of Pittsburgh, where he earned a Bachelors in Art History in 1970. Intrigued by the unique Roman Catholic Cuzco School that flourished in Peru during the subjugation of the Incan people, he studied Spanish for several years, finally traveling to Peru in 1976 to paint the people and countryside, as well as making cover illustrations for Oriental Magazine. In 1978 he arrived in Bogota, Colombia where he worked teaching English while studying under the painter Armando Villegas. He returned to the United States briefly in the early 1980s, but when he visited Cartagena de India in 1984 he fell in love with the area and settled there, becoming a permanent resident of Colombia in 1991. Since then he has had exhibitions in the United States, Peru, and Colombia, winning awards from the Ministry of Culture in Colombia and selling his pieces to private collectors all over the world.
