John Roderick Dempster MacKenzie (1865-1941) was a British-American painter who developed his artistic passion in Mobile, Alabama, before studying at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, and the Académie Julian in Paris. From 1899, he and his wife spent over a decade in Calcutta, India, where he gained great acclaim, traveling and painting vibrant scenes for the East India Company and local nobility. Upon returning to the U.S. in 1913, MacKenzie settled back in Mobile, where he taught art, created WWI propaganda, and painted local industries. Though he died virtually forgotten, a rediscovery of his vibrant works in the 1970s led to collectors seeking out his pieces.
Heavily yellowed. Commensurate with age.
