Artist Biography:
John Ogilby (1600–1676) was a Scottish-born English translator, cartographer, and publisher, best known for his pioneering work in road mapping. Originally a dancer and theater owner, Ogilby turned to literature and cartography after a series of financial setbacks, including the Great Fire of London. His most famous work, *Britannia* (1675), was the first detailed road atlas of England and Wales, setting new standards for map accuracy and design. He introduced the concept of the "scale of miles" in maps, which became a standard practice. Ogilby's contributions to cartography and publishing significantly influenced future geographical and travel literature in Britain.
