John Marin (1870–1953) was an influential American modernist painter and printmaker best known for his expressive watercolors and early experiments with abstraction. Born in Rutherford, New Jersey, he studied art in the United States before spending several formative years in Europe, where he absorbed modernist influences. Closely associated with photographer and gallery owner Alfred Stieglitz and the artists of his New York circle, Marin became known for energetic depictions of cityscapes and natural landscapes, especially the rugged coast of Maine. His loose brushwork, dynamic compositions, and emphasis on movement helped bridge Impressionism and American modernism, making him one of the first U.S. artists to push watercolor toward abstraction. Marin’s work is held in major museum collections and had a lasting impact on later generations of American modernist painters.
