John L. Doyle (1939–2010) was an American artist, printmaker, and educator known for his expressive lithographs and works that explore history, mythology, cultural identity, and social themes. Born in Chicago, Doyle studied at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and developed a distinctive practice centered on printmaking, particularly lithography, where he combined technical precision with complex narratives drawn from anthropology, folklore, and historical events. His best-known works include the Sharpshooters series, created for the American Bicentennial, which examined the human consequences of war and national memory. Influenced by artists such as Honoré Daumier and Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, Doyle created imagery that blended social commentary with rich visual symbolism. His works are held in museum collections, including the National Gallery of Art.
