John Frederick Herring Sr. (1795-1865) was a celebrated British painter renowned for his equestrian and animal art during the Victorian era. Born in London and initially trained while working as a coach and inn-sign painter, he moved to Doncaster at age 18, where his exposure to racehorses inspired a lifelong passion for depicting them. Herring transitioned from painting coach insignia to capturing hunters, racehorses, and sporting scenes for wealthy patrons, eventually earning prestigious commissions. In 1845, he was appointed animal painter to the Duchess of Kent and later gained the patronage of Queen Victoria, solidifying his reputation. Later in life, he expanded his focus to rural and farmyard scenes, combining the vigor of sport with the quiet rhythms of pastoral life. He exhibited widely and is remembered for his technical skill, elegant compositions, and enduring influence on 19th-century sporting art.
