John Clark Askwith (known professionally as John Asquith) was born on August 29th, 1943 in Great Falls, Montana. When his father returned from service in World War II the family moved to Tilden, Nebraska, where he first became interested in art and photography. In 1965 he obtained his Bachelor of Fine Arts from Wayne State College where he met his wife Sharon Sulka. After they married they moved to Indiana where both he and his wife taught school, and in 1968 he began his graduate work at the Art Institute of Chicago before graduating with a MS from Illinois Institute of Technology and Design. The family moved there so he could teach printmaking at the Institute, which is when he began signing his work with his new name. By the mid 1970s he was well-known in the Midwest for his drawings, acrylic paintings, serigraphs, constructions, vacuum formed sculpture, ceramics, and airbrush portraits. His art was exhibited in galleries and juried competitions throughout the nation, and wound up in corporate, private, and public collections around the world. His later years were spent in graphic design, crafting posters, book illustrations, and much more while traveling extensively to gather new inspiration. An aggressive treatment in the late 2010s for lung cancer weakened his immune system, but he continued to paint, draw, and sculpt right up until his death on October 4th, 2019 while visiting his children in Florida.
