A third child is seen closing a front door as a mother looks out. The artist does a great job of juxtaposing the good and the bad. It looks cold, not everyone is of great health, but the happiness and joy throughout the picture brings a sense of hope and warmth on a cold winters night. Johan-Mari-Henri Ten Kate was a painter of genre subjects and was born in the Hague on March 4, 1831. He was the brother of Herman Frederick Ten Cate and the father of Johannes- Marinus Ten Cate, both of whom were also artists.
