Jim Dine (born 1935) is an American artist, poet, and printmaker who was a key figure in the Neo-Dada and Pop Art movements, though he always sought to distance himself from the latter. Born in Cincinnati, he began his formal art training at 16 at the Art Academy of Cincinnati. He studied printmaking at Ohio University, where he experimented with various techniques, including lithography and etching. After moving to New York, Dine co-founded the Judson Church Gallery and, along with artists like Claes Oldenburg and Allan Kaprow, became a pioneer of happenings and art performances in the late 1950s. While he was linked to Pop Art due to his inclusion in exhibitions with artists like Roy Lichtenstein and Andy Warhol, his work remained deeply personal and subjective, often featuring recurring motifs like hearts and bathrobes. A dedicated educator, Dine has taught at numerous universities, including Yale and Cornell, and his work is held in the permanent collections of major museums worldwide, including the Whitney Museum of American Art and the Guggenheim Museum. Now in his late 80s, he continues to create art from his home and studio in Putney, Vermont.
