Jessica Plattner was born in St. Louis, Missouri in 1972. Her mother was the artist Phyllis Plattner, who spent much of her life as an educator and was the primary teacher for her daughter throughout her busy childhood. She earned a BFA from Washington University School of Art in St. Louis (now the Sam Fox School of Design and Visual Arts), and her MFA from the Tyler School of Art in Philadelphia. She spent a year in Rome, Italy before returning to the US to work as a full-time, tenured professor at Eastern Oregon University. During this time she received a Fulbright Scholarship to La Universidad de Guanajuato, Mexico, where she created a new body of work and taught a class in Spanish on Self-Portraiture. Other artist residencies include the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture in Maine, the Vermont Studio Center, and Studio Art Centers International (SACI) in Florence, Italy. She gained an international reputation for her passion for painting, teaching, and travel, and was hired as the head of the art department at Medicine Hat College in Alberta in 2014. She settled in Canada permanently, with her husband, the artist Dean Smale, and their daughter Sofonisba.
