Born in Dalton, Georgia in 1895, Farnsworth moved to New York at the age of sixteen to join the U.S. Navy, serving during World War I. After the war he studied on Cape Cod with Charles Hawthorne, eventually opening the Farnsworth School of Art there as well as a studio in Sarasota, Florida, where he became “the father figure of the Sarasota Art Colony.” He met and married artist Helen Sawyer, the daughter of artist Wells Sawyer, and began to specialize in figure and portrait drawing, as we can see in this particular piece. Farnsworth taught art at the Art Students League and the Grand Central School of Art in New York before being elected to the National Academy in 1938. Farnsworth published a book, "Painting with Jerry Farnsworth," and his works are represented in the permanent collections of the New York Metropolitan Museum, the Whitney Museum, the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, the Houston Museum, and the Delgado Museum in New Orleans. He passed away in 1982 in Sarasota.
