Jean-Pierre Vasarely, known professionally as Yvaral (1934–2002), was a French artist and the son of renowned Op Art pioneer Victor Vasarely. Following in his father’s footsteps, Yvaral became a key figure in the Op Art and Kinetic Art movements, co-founding the Groupe de Recherche d’Art Visuel (GRAV) in 1960. He explored the intersection of art and technology, using mathematical systems and computer algorithms to create visually dynamic, abstract compositions that play with perception, light, and movement. Yvaral coined the term “numerical art” to describe his process of digitally manipulating images, often reducing photographs—such as those of famous figures like Marilyn Monroe—into geometric forms. His work continues to be celebrated for its innovative fusion of traditional artistic principles with emerging digital tools.
