Jean Holdenried (1913-2009) American, Oil on Canvas. Signed lower left. Depicts a Native American chief on horseback followed by a companion, with tall mountains and plains in the background. Overall size: 23 X 19 in. Sight size: 17 1/2 X 13 1/2 in. #1465 . Jean Dunblane Holdenried (nee Dorn) was born in Kelseyville, California in February 1913. Born to a pioneer farming family, she lived her entire life there. Her father was a graduate of Stanford University and Hasting Law School, later becoming a pear grower. Upon entering the California College of Arts and Crafts she focused on landscapes and still lifes. She married Eugene Holdenried in 1933 and focused on homemaking until her children had grown and left home, at which time she traveled between San Francisco and Florida to resume art lessons. In addition to her art, she was a rancher, pear grower, and conservationist, and passed away in September 2009, by which time hundreds of California homes were full of her paintings, barn boards, and mosaics.
