Jay Hall Connaway (1893–1970) was an American marine and landscape painter best known for his powerful, atmospheric depictions of the sea and rugged New England coast. Born in Liberty, Indiana, he studied under William Forsyth, George Bridgman, and William Merritt Chase before serving in World War I and later studying in Paris at the Académie Julian and École des Beaux-Arts. Drawn to the drama of coastal landscapes, Connaway spent much of his career painting in Maine, first at Head Harbor and later on Monhegan Island, where he lived year-round with his family from 1931 to 1947 and operated an art school. His bold brushwork and restrained palette captured crashing surf, rocky cliffs, storms, and changing skies with an energetic, muscular style influenced by Winslow Homer and Rockwell Kent. He later settled in Dorset, Vermont, where he continued to paint and teach, and was elected a National Academician in 1943.
