Japanese Porcelain Disk. 19th Century. Japanese ceramic disk with an overglazed enameled scene of a lake, rustic dwellings, trees, mountains, and two cranes flying. Inset in a professional frame with a blue velvet background and covered with glass. The reverse side of frame has a circular cutout exposing a blue three-character vertical mark; the top character is that for “sun” (also the first character of “Nippon”), the middle character for “bright” and the bottom character is that for “made by.” The characters may represent a potter’s guild. It may have served the purpose as a plate or a decorative piece. The scene features a woodman’s house against a lush and leafy outcropping of a landscape with a small bridge in the foreground. The entire piece has been made in muted colors of pigments. It is in good condition and may be considered very fine.
