Japanese room dividers, most famously folding screens (byōbu) and sliding panels (fusuma and shōji), are central to traditional interior design, balancing function and artistry. Made from lightweight wood frames covered with paper, silk, or lacquered surfaces, they served to partition space flexibly in homes, temples, and palaces while allowing light and air to flow. Folding screens often became canvases for elaborate paintings of landscapes, seasonal themes, or gold-leaf scenes, turning them into portable works of art. Sliding fusuma panels typically featured more subdued ink or color paintings, while translucent shōji, covered with rice paper, filtered daylight into soft, diffuse glow. Beyond their practical role, these dividers embody Japanese aesthetics of impermanence, adaptability, and harmony between art and architecture.
