A kakejiku (or kakemono) is a traditional Japanese hanging scroll used to display paintings or calligraphy. Featuring silk edges and a flexible backing, they are rolled up for storage and classically hung in a home's tokonoma (alcove). The origin is said to date back to the Nara period (710-794), and scrolls were traditionally viewed from a seiza (kneeling) position, leading to their incorporation in many aspects of Japanese life but particularly the tea ceremony.
