Japanese Kutani ware, first produced in the 17th century in Ishikawa Prefecture, is celebrated for its bold use of overglaze enamels and richly decorated surfaces. Early Kutani pieces, known as Ko-Kutani (“old Kutani”), featured striking colors such as deep green, blue, yellow, purple, and red, often arranged in strong contrasts and filled with intricate patterns of landscapes, birds, flowers, and figures. Later styles expanded the palette and refined the designs, blending Japanese aesthetics with influences from Chinese porcelain traditions. Kutani ware’s combination of vivid color, detailed brushwork, and imaginative motifs made it highly distinctive and sought after both in Japan and abroad, and it remains a vibrant tradition continued by modern artisans who honor its legacy while experimenting with new forms.
Rubbing throughout. Hairline cracks on underside.
