Japanese Carved Bone Netsuke of Mouse on Gourd. Very sweet cream-colored netsuke bead carving of a mouse with red eyes perched atop a textured gourd.
Size: 1 1/2 x 1 1/2 x 3/4 in.
A Japanese netsuke is a small, intricately carved toggle traditionally used in the Edo period (17th–19th centuries) to secure objects such as inro or small pouches to the sash of a kimono, since kimonos lacked pockets. Made from materials like ivory, wood, bone, or antler, netsuke often depict animals, mythological figures, everyday scenes, or abstract designs, showcasing the carver’s skill in miniature sculpture. Beyond their practical function, netsuke became collectible art objects, admired for their craftsmanship, detail, and imaginative compositions. Today, they are valued both as historical artifacts reflecting Japanese culture and as exquisite examples of miniature decorative art.
