Japanese Aritaware Porcelain Blue and White Tokkuri Sake Bottle. Blue and white porcelain vase featuring a distinctive garlic-head (suantou) or pear-shaped silhouette, characterized by a rounded, full body that tapers gracefully into a slender, elongated neck with a subtle flare at the rim. The main decorative field of the body is meticulously covered in a dense, overall pattern known as "rice-grain" or "dot and dash" stippling, executed in cobalt blue underglaze. This fine background subtly highlights larger, less defined decorative motifs or cartouches within the stippling.
Size: 6 x 6 x 11 in.
Japanese Arita ware porcelain, originating from the town of Arita in Kyushu during the early 17th century, is celebrated for its fine, white porcelain body and intricate overglaze decoration. Often featuring cobalt-blue underglaze designs, as well as colorful enamel-painted motifs of flowers, landscapes, and mythological scenes, Arita ware became highly prized both domestically and for export, particularly to Europe under the name “Imari” porcelain. The pieces range from functional tableware to decorative vases and figurines, all reflecting meticulous craftsmanship, elegant proportions, and a harmonious balance of color and form. Arita porcelain remains a symbol of Japan’s ceramic tradition, combining technical innovation with aesthetic refinement.
