Jūbako (“tiered boxes”) are tiered boxes used to hold and present food in Japan. The boxes are often used to hold osechi, foods traditional to the Japanese New Year, or to hold takeaway lunches or bento. The boxes are often lacquered and highly ornate, and were first introduced to Japan by China by at least the 9th Century. In the Edo period these tiered boxes became an integral part of sagejū or sagejūbako (“portable jūbako”), picnic sets in a carrier with handles. There is also jikirō (“food basket”), a kind of Chinese styled bowl, some stackable like jūbako. Created in nearly endless combinations, colors, and sizes, they were common symbols of luxury and were given as wedding gifts. Today they are less common, but are often seen at luxury resorts and in some temples to accompany various ceremonies, with less colorful and expensive models put to use in some smaller restaurants and tea houses.
