Jānis Kalmīte (1907–1996) was a Latvian-born American painter best known for his poetic depictions of rural Latvian life and traditional farmsteads. Born in Latvia, he studied art in Riga before fleeing his homeland during World War II and eventually settling in the United States. Much of his work centers on the Latvian countryside—particularly barns, fields, and village scenes—rendered with textured surfaces and a warm, earthy palette that evoke memory and cultural identity. Through his paintings, Kalmīte preserved a vision of prewar Latvia, creating deeply nostalgic images that resonated strongly with the Latvian diaspora and established him as an important figure in Latvian émigré art.
