Janet Laura Scott was born in Wisconsin in 1888 and spent her formative years in Illinois, where she attended the Art Institute of Chicago. She spent a year abroad in Munich, returning just before the outbreak of World War I. She produced greeting cards and picture book illustrations for the PF Volland publishing company, which specialized in “Sunny” picture books, ones that told happy stories to children. Her bright watercolors with their flat color and minimal shading kept her steadily busy with them, although she began to explore other media to create her illustrations. In 1926 she met the artist Carroll Thayer Berry and during the Depression they bought a house in Wiscasset, Maine. Their home became a meeting place for craftsmen and artists of the region. She continued working in illustration, usually under the name “Janet Scott Berry.” After World War II they moved to a home in Rockport, Maine, where she became enamored with the coastline and turned her attention to landscape painting. She passed away in 1968.
