James “Jim” Lorimer Keirstead was born December 18th, 1932 in Saint John, New Brunswick, Canada, and grew up in Toronto, Whitby, and Sharbot Lake around successful artists who encouraged his own talent. At 17 he joined the Canadian Army and served in the Korean War for two years as an ambulance driver. Returning to Canada, he settled in Kingston, Ontario, working as a Provincial Police Constable while taking art courses and developing his own style, finally becoming a full-time painter in 1965. His earliest works were landscapes, cityscapes, and seascapes around the Provinces, before he began traveling around the world to gain inspiration from the views of the Cotswolds, Kenya wildlife, and much more. After the death of his wife Robere in 2021, who acted as his business manager for all of his career, he moved into the Cataraqui Heights Retirement Home, but continues to make new art and offer lessons to fellow retirees.
