Painting depicts a sailing scene. James G. Tyler born in Oswego, New York; was a maritime painter and illustrator who became very well known during his lifetime. Tyler's signature painting became known for the emphasis on mood and impression rather than for detailed realism. In addition to painting all types of boats-from old sloops to clipper ships-he painted a variety of seamen, coastal scenes and seascapes.
Signed in lower left. Overall size: 14 3/4 x 18 1/2 in. Sight size: 7 1/2 x 11 1/2 in.
