James Bunnell was born August 15th, 1947 in Santa Monica, California. He studied music in high school and played with several local bands in his youth, including the Unrhodes, Future, and Anno Domini. He also developed a fascination with art while helping his father run the family-owned design and silk screening business, producing black light posters, landscape oil paintings, and surreal watercolors, often with Asiatic and fantasy themes. After his father’s death when Bunnell was eighteen, he continued to run the business alone and play music while studying to become an architect. He attended USC School of Architecture on scholarship, and went on to develop many large commercial buildings in Los Angeles including the late Hollywood Park Casino, as well as several public housing complexes for the Skid Row neighborhood. He and his wife moved to Manhattan Beach in 1984 to raise their two children, and he continued to make art after retiring from architecture right up until his death after a long battle with kidney cancer on October 21st, 2016.
