Jacques Guerlain (1874-1963) French, Kadine Crystal Perfume Bottle in Original Box.
In the former Ottoman Empire, the term "Kadine" meant a woman in the harem of the Sultan who was elevated to the status of wife by becoming his "favorite." During a visit to the Topkapi Palace, Guerlain saw a portrait of a Kadine and was struck by her incredible beauty. Finding out that legend said she was endowed with an exceptional olfactory gift, he returned to Paris and created a perfume in her name in 1911. The line was discontinued in 2023. Original labels attached on front and bottom.

Jacques Edouard Guerlain was born in Colombes, France on October 7th, 1874. He grew up to be one of the most prolific and influential perfumers of the 20th Century, the third and most famous of the Guerlain family. Over eighty of Guerlain’s perfumes remain known, although document fragments and anecdotal evidence place certain estimates at closer to four hundred. Among his greatest fragrances are L’Heure Bleue (1912), Mitsouko (1919), and Shalimar (1925). Though his work earned him universal renown, a considerable fortune, and honors such as that of Chevalier of the Legion of Honour, Guerlain avoided public attention, never once granting an interview. As a result, relatively little is known of his creative process or personal life outside of the handful of people, mostly in the upper classes of Europe, who were able to interact with him. His contributions to the late Belle Epoque and Interwar aesthetics, as well as his melancholy and distinctive designs for bottles as well as his perfumes, have had a profound influence on numerous perfumers and artists ever since. He passed away in Paris on May 2nd, 1963, and many of his major works are archived in their original form at the Osmothèque, donated by Thierry Wasser on behalf of the Guerlain family in 2014.
