Religious painting titled "The Holy Family" by Jacob Jordaens, a Flemish painted, draughtsman, and tapestry designer known for his history paintings, genre scenes, and portraits. After Rubens and Van Dyck, he was the leading Flemish Baroque painted of his day. He never studied abroad, in fact he spent his entire life in Antwerp; nevertheless he obtained prints or copies of works by other artists, and he was heavily influenced by Jacopo Bassano, Titian, Veronese, and Caravaggio. His religious paintings reflect his interest in the Bible. His paintings were warm and glowing, with a strong contrast of light and shade, and at the end of his career, he moved from vibrant colors to a gray-blue palette, often accented with dull browns, so this painting may have been done after the 1650's. He had fifteen pupils between 1621 and 1667 and his studio relied on his assistants and pupils in the production of his paintings. An atelier label on the verso means the painting was probably done in Jordaens' workshop, with the help of his pupils or assistants. The overall size is 29 1/4 x 26 3/8 in. wide and the sight size is 24 x 21 in. wide.
