In1826 English-born Samuel Lord started a dry goods and women’s wear store in New York City, and was joined by his wife’s cousin, George Washington Taylor, in 1834, leading to the official naming of Lord & Taylor. By the end of the Civil War they were one of the biggest wholesale department stores in the city, expanding throughout the next century into other states and ventures, with Dorothy Shaver becoming the first woman to head a major retail establishment in 1945 under their Associated Dry Goods unit. The flagship Fifth Avenue store closed in 2019, and until 2021 Lord & Taylor operated 86 brick-and-mortar stores around the United States, but bankruptcy proceedings in 2020 and the COVID-19 pandemic led them to shutter all physical stores and online operations in 2021. Lord & Taylor’s intellectual property was sold to Saadia Group, who relaunched it as an online department store in 2021, but in 2024 Saadia Group’s assets were seized by court order and sold to Regal Brands Global, who have relaunched their e-commerce business as of 2025.
