Ion Tamaian (also known as Jon Tamaian as well as “Ion Art” and “Jon Art” from various signatures) was born in 1954 in Romania, and became known throughout the world for his unique art glass creations. As a young boy growing up in the small village of Borlesti, he was influenced by the simplicity of rural life as well as the artisans in local studios, incorporating natural elements into his earliest works. This combination of traditionalism and modernism is evident in Ion’s abstract works, and after graduating from the Academy of Fine Arts in Cluj-Napoca, Romania in 1976 he began to make yearly trips around Europe, seeking out new techniques to improve his works and developing an extensive list of commissions that kept him busy for decades. He continues to produce new works at his home studio in Sibiu, Romania, and holds yearly exhibitions both in his home country and abroad.
