International Sterling Silver Weighted Commemorative Pedestal Compote Bowl. A swirled scalloped edge and a deep bowl, with a flared column over the sturdy base. Marked on the underside with "weighted and reinforced" along with an inscription in multiple parts: "To Mary and Rudy Feb. 14, 1965 In Loving Appreciation Your Covenanters." Covenanters were 17th Century Scottish Presbyterians who bound themselves by oaths (covenants) to defend the independent rule of Jesus Christ over the Church of Scotland (the Kirk) and to resist royal interference in religious and civil affairs, beginning in 1638. Through a series of rebellions and battles the movement was slaughtered and dwindled significantly over the centuries, with most survivors eventually absorbed into the Free Church of Scotland in 1876. In America many former Covenanters joined the Reformed Presbyterian Church of North America, which was founded in 1743, and continue to honor their heritage and traditions to this day.

The International Silver Company was founded in Meriden, Connecticut, in 1898 by consolidating numerous regional and international silver firms, including Meriden Britannia, Meriden Silver Plate, Middletown Plate, C. Rogers & Brother, Simpson, Hall, Miller & Co., and several others, with later additions from New York and Toronto. Into the 20th Century their silver designs bore either the ISC brand or dual attribution with the original maker, and by the 1920s the company also operated as Insilco Corporation. Beginning in 1937 ISC produced silverware for Hollywood stars like Anne Baxter, Joan Crawford, and Judy Garland, sponsoring a television program called “Silver Theater” in 1949 to promote its wares. By the 1960s, however, most of their original factories had closed or consolidated, leaving Meriden as the production hub until its liquidation in 1982, after which International Silver, Ltd. continued as a trading company dealing in scrap metals, refining, and mining, while the ISC name still appears on new products. Designs from its history are now held in museums such as the Dallas Museum of Art, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Art Institute of Chicago, and the British Museum.
