The Roman Pantheon is one of the best-preserved and most architecturally significant buildings of ancient Rome, originally constructed during the reign of Augustus around 27 BCE by Marcus Agrippa, and later rebuilt by Emperor Hadrian around 118–125 CE after earlier structures were destroyed. Despite its name—meaning "temple of all gods"—its exact original purpose remains debated. Architecturally, it is renowned for its massive domed ceiling, which remains the world’s largest unreinforced concrete dome. The oculus at its center, a 30-foot-wide circular opening, allows natural light to flood the space and symbolizes a connection between the temple and the heavens. The building’s design, with its harmonious proportions, portico of massive granite Corinthian columns, and rotunda, has deeply influenced Western architecture for centuries. Now functioning as a Catholic church (the Basilica of St. Mary and the Martyrs), the Pantheon continues to be a profound testament to Roman engineering and spiritual legacy.
