This book is titled "The Ingoldsby Legends or Mirth & Marvels", by Thomas Ingoldsby Esquire and illustrated by Arthur Rackham, the book was published in London by J.M. Dent & Sons at Aldine House in 1922 and bound by Riviere. The book has five raised bands, six gilt-ruled compartments with a red label, lettering, and fanciful gilt motifs on the spine, the front cover is polished calf with triple gilt-fillet borders, gilt dentelles on marbled endpapers, the first blank endpaper is stamped "Bound By Riviere " at the bottom, the half-title is followed by the edition information - the first issue of this edition was printed in 1898 and this is the fifth edition, printed in April 1922, the frontispiece is a full-page colored illustration by Rackham in an Art Nouveau style, then the title page, two pages of Contents, a List of Illustrations in color - there are 12, including the frontispiece - then a four-page List of Illustrations in Black, a seven page Introduction, a four-page Preface to the First and Second Series, 638 pages of text, and all the edges are gilt. The Ingoldsby Legends are a collection of myths, legends, ghost stories and poems writing by Thomas Ingoldsby, actually the pen name of an English clerygman named Richard Harris Barham; they were first printed in 1837 and have been so popular, they continue to be published. Arthur Rackham (1867 - 1939) was an English book illustrator who was recognized as one of the leading figures during the Golden Age of British book illustrations, and he did some of the most robust pen and ink drawings you'd ever want to see. The book measures 7 3/4 x 45 /12 in. wide, with a tight binding and clean pages, and the illustrations are clean as well. There's light rubbing on the bands and on the crown and heel of the spine, light rubbing near the tips and along the top edge of the back cover, and still a very attractive book in a fine binding by Riviere that would be just a great gift for a child who loves enchantment and great art. #73 #1693
