Tenun Doyo weaving is a traditional textile art of the Dayak Benuaq people of East Kalimantan, Indonesia, distinguished by its use of fibers from the doyo plant (a hardy wild leaf plant) rather than cotton or silk. Practiced for generations in communities around Kutai Barat Regency, the process involves harvesting, drying, and hand-spinning the fibers before weaving them on simple looms into durable cloth. The resulting textiles feature geometric and symbolic motifs that reflect Dayak cosmology, social identity, and ties to nature, with natural dyes historically derived from bark, roots, and leaves. Tenun Doyo cloth is used in ceremonial dress and cultural rituals, and today it also serves as a vital expression of cultural preservation — sustaining indigenous knowledge, local livelihoods, and regional identity while adapting to contemporary appreciation for handmade heritage textiles.
