This figure is likely a representation of an apsara, possibly Urvashi, wearing jewelry, multiple hand and leg ornaments, and a patterned cropped blouse and fitted shorts. Her stylised form, with a narrow waist and large breasts swayed in the midst of a dance, is a common representation of the celestial beings who came down from svarga (Heaven) to seduce the ascetics who would otherwise become more powerful than the gods with their devotion. It may also be a representation of Radha, the goddess of love, the avatar of Lakshmi, and Krishna’s main consort, although the details are not clear enough to determine. The arch around the figure, along with the base, suggests that it was created to adorn a wall, but the continued quality and attention to detail seen from the reverse makes it more likely that this was on a door as a peephole, or even an open hollow in a wall, where the figure could be seen from both sides.
