Bernard Buffet (1928–1999) was a prolific French painter, printmaker, and illustrator key to post-World War II Expressionism. Admitted to the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris at just 15 years old, he quickly gained international acclaim in his twenties, earning the prestigious Prix de la Critique in 1948. Buffet developed a signature aesthetic characterized by sharp, spiky outlines, angular forms, and a somber, muted color palette that evoked the existential melancholy and alienation of postwar Europe. His extensive body of work—spanning portraits, still lifes, landscapes, and religious imagery—won him widespread popularity and high-profile honors, including election to the Académie des Beaux-Arts in 1974 and the establishment of a dedicated museum showcasing his art in Japan.
