Important Large Dresden Porcelain Floor Urn. Comes in three pieces, with putti and numerous colorful decorations throughout. Marked on the inside of each piece.

Founded in 1872 by Carl-Johann Gottlob Thieme, the Sächsische Porzellan-Manufaktur Dresden specialized in decorative luxury porcelain in the Potschappel suburb of Freital, Saxony, Germany. The factory became famous for its “lush flower covering” style, a technique developed by flower modeller Carl August Kuntzsch that defined the brand’s aesthetic. Following World War II the company was nationalized as a state-owned enterprise in East Germany before returning to private ownership after German reunification. In the 1980s the firm won the exclusive legal right to use the prestigious name “Dresden Porcelain” over other competitors, but despite its rich artistic heritage the company struggled with frequent ownership changes and financial instability throughout the late 20th and early 21st Centuries. Production ultimately ceased in 2020 after decades of decline and the catastrophic loss of thousands of historic plaster models due to building neglect and a roof collapse.
