Galt & Bro. was established in Alexandria, Virginia in 1802, later incorporated into Washington, D.C. as one of the oldest companies in the District. It was founded by watchmaker and silversmith James Galt, eventually becoming the premier high-end jeweler and silversmithing firm in the American capital. Operating for nearly two centuries until its closure in 2001, the historic house earned an exceptional reputation for crafting fine silver hollowware, custom presentation pieces, and exquisite jewelry for generations of political elites. Its distinguished clientele included numerous U.S. presidents, foreign dignitaries, and prominent historical figures such as Abraham Lincoln and Ulysses S. Grant. The firm also developed deep ties to the White House through Norman Galt, whose widow Edith Bolling Galt subsequently married President Woodrow Wilson before managing the enterprise. After the closure of the storefront the brand was acquired by private equity and rebranded as Galt Couture, which continues to produce goods used and worn by celebrities, dignitaries, and political leaders around the world.
