Important 18th century bejeweled Russian icon of the Virgin Mary, in Znamenie Presvyatuiya Bogoroditsui (Sign of the Holy Mother of God). Gesso and levkas on wood board in original wooden riza, circa 1790 - 1810. An impressive collection of semi-precious stones is incorporated into the lavish design. One circular grouping of garnets is floating inside the shadowbox frame, has been since removed to avoid scratching during transporation.
The “Sign” icon is one of the famous “palladium” icons, considered to be city protectors, and that its legendary history says it saved the citizens of the great trading city of Novgorod in the northwest of Russia from the invading Suzdalians.
