Ilya Bolotowsky was born on July 1st, 1907 in St. Petersburg, Russia, and developed an early fascination with searching for philosophical order in visual expression, embracing Cubism and geometric abstraction while being heavily influenced by Piet Mondrian. He and his Jewish parents fled to Azerbaijan and Turkey before immigrating to the United States in 1923, where he settled in New York and obtained citizenship six years later. He attended the National Academy of Design and was part of the “Ten Whitney Dissenters” who rebelled against the strictures of the Academy and held their own independent exhibitions, inspired by the tenets of De Stijl. In 1936 he co-founded the American Abstract Artists cooperative, and did some of the first abstract murals under the Federal Art Project. He taught art at Black Mountain College after World War II, and went on to teach humanities and fine arts at numerous other institutions including Brooklyn College, Hunter College, and the University of New Mexico, shifting into three-dimensional forms in the 1960s. His first solo museum show was not until 1974 at the Guggenheim, by which time he was already in failing health, and he died on November 22nd, 1981, having inspired many generations of American students of abstract art.
