Ilias Lalaounis (1920-2013) was a world-renowned Greek goldsmith and jewelry designer who revolutionized the industry by transforming ancient museum artifacts into high-fashion, wearable art. Born in Athens into a multigenerational family of artisans, he initially studied law and political science before taking the helm of his uncle’s jewelry house, Zolotas. In 1957 he launched the Archaeological Collection, which drew inspiration from Classical, Hellenistic, Minoan, and Mycenaean art. He founded Greek Gold - Ilias Lalaounis S.A. in 1969, expanding his creative vision in the 1970s with avant-garde collections inspired by astronomy, medicine, and nature. His distinct signature style relied on bold, sculptural uses of high-karat gold, hand-hammering techniques, and historical motifs that captured the attention of style icons like Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis and Elizabeth Taylor. In 1990 he became the only jeweler ever to be inducted into the Académie des Beaux-Arts, and his enduring legacy is preserved today through a jewelry museum opened in 1994 under the Acropolis in Athens, with his four daughters continuing to run the firm since his death.
