This is a charcoal and pastel landscape by Hugo Anton Fisher, who was known for watercolor landscapes. Born in Kladno, Bohemia (now part of Czechoslovakia), he studied art with his father, then emigrated to America in 1874, lived in New York City, moved to Alameda, California in 1886, and eventually set up a studio in nearby San Francisco. He would commute to his studio by ferryboat and sketch scenes of the marshes and countryside along the way. He became recognized in California for his impressionist style. Unfortunately many of his paintings were destroyed in the San Francisco earthquake of 1906. The overall size 29 x 22 in. wide and the sight size is 20 x 13 1/2 in. wide.
