This oil on canvas was done by Hugh Bolton Jones, a noted American landscape artist who was born in Baltimore. He was influenced by the Hudson River School, and In the 1860's and 70's, he painted many landscapes of the eastern U.S., from Maryland to West Virginia and north to the Berkshires of Massachusetts. In the 1870's, he joined an art colony in Pont-Aven, France, and painted his first mature plein-air work, a winter scene in Brittany. This reflected the Barbizon style of art. In 1880 he returned to the U.S., where he painted landscapes which emphasized the seasonal effects of light and the time of day. He received awards at the Paris Exposition in 1900 and the St. Louis Exposition in 1904. Signed in lower right. Sight size is 13 1/2 x 19 1/2 in., overall size is 21 1/2 x 27 1/2 in.
