Hua-Yao Tung was born in Taiwan in 1951. As a youth he was drawn to both Western and Oriental art and graduated from the Fine Art Department of Taiwan Normal University in 1973. He developed his own style by combining modern European techniques and aesthetics with classic Chinese disciplines and themes. He traveled to America afterwards, and spent the next thirty years exploring the country, culture, and regional artwork, living and painting in New York, Michigan, Washington, and California, before winding up in Florida. An exhibition of his work at the Tampa Museum of Art led him to fall in love with the state, exploring the coasts and interior before settling in Valrico. His mixed media paintings usually combine ink, watercolor, gouache, pastel, and acrylic, as well as occasionally incorporating gold leaf and special textural elements. His focus is primarily on nature, which came both from his classic training and the inspiration of the lush flora and fauna of his adopted home. With numerous solo shows throughout the United States, Canada, Japan, South America, and Europe, his work can be found in private and corporate collections throughout, including that of The Walt Disney Company, Du Pont Corporation, the City of New Smyrna Beach Historical Museum, and the National Art Museum in Taipei, Taiwan.
