HMS Beagle was a 10-gun brig of the Royal Navy, launched in 1820, that gained lasting fame as the vessel that carried Charles Darwin on his five-year voyage around the world from 1831 to 1836. Originally built for coastal defense, the ship was refitted as a survey vessel, tasked with charting coastlines and improving naval maps—particularly of South America. During this journey, Darwin collected specimens, made detailed observations of geology and wildlife, and developed ideas that would later form the foundation of his theory of evolution by natural selection. Though modest in size and never a warship of renown, the Beagle became immortalized through science, its name forever tied to one of the most influential journeys in human thought.
