History Of Rebellion & Civil Wars In England, Clarendon 1843. This book is titled “The History Of The Rebellion And Civil Wars In England, By Edward Earl Of Clarendon: Also His Life Written By Himself. In Which Is Included A Continuation Of His History Of The Grand Rebellion”, it is a “New Edition, from the Original Manuscript, with Copious Indexes”, published in Oxford at the University Press in MDCCCXLIII [1843], and it has “Clarendon’s History Of The Rebellion” in gilt lettering on the spine. The book has five raised bands, with gilt lettering and elaborate gilt tooling on the spine, double gilt-fillet borders and corner devices on diced calf covers, marbled endpapers with the bookplate of Edward Ridley on the front paste-down, “E. Ridley. from H.M.B. Harrow 1862” is inscribed on the front blank flyleaf (Harrow is a famous public school in London), an Advertisement after the title page says the original manuscript at the Bodleian Library has been followed throughout and suppressed passages have been restored, there are 1282 pages of text, with double columns on each page, followed by two Indexes (the first index is about the History of the Rebellion and the second one is about the life of the author), there are a total of 1364 pages in the book, and all the edges are gilt. This large work is an important first-hand account of the English Civil War that began in 1641; the first edition was written by Edward Hyde, the first Earl of Clarendon and published in three volumes between 1702 and 1704. Hyde (1609 - 1674) was an English statesman who served as chief advisor to King Charles I during the First English Civil War, and Hyde was Lord Chancellor to Charles II from 1660 to 1667. After the Second Anglo-Dutch War (1665 to 1667), Hyde was falsely accused of treason and fled to France, where he wrote this, his major work. The book measures 10 1/8 x 7 x 2 3/4 in. deep, with a tight binding and clean pages and text, there are some brown spots on the front and rear endpapers and the title page and that’s pretty much it, with light rubbing along the edges of the spine and scrapes on the covers, two tips are slightly turned in, and still an attractive book with an in-depth history of the English Civil War. #189 #1648
