A History of the American Revolution, Paul Allen 1822. A History Of The American Revolution: Comprehending All The Principal Events Both In The Field And In The Cabinet. By Paul Allen, Esq. To Which Are Added, The Most Important Resolutions Of The Continental Congress, and Many Of The Most Important Letters Of General Washington. In Two Volumes, Baltimore: Printed For Franklin Betts, Wm. Wooddy, Jr. printer. 1822. Both volumes are 3/4 bound, with gilt titles and horizontal gilt-ruled lines on the spines, brown boards with marbled covers, and blank endpapers. Volume I has a four-page Preface, a five-page Table of Contents, and 592 pages of text. Volume II has eleven pages for a Table of Contents and 510 pages of text, and is missing a blank endpaper at the rear, and this is a second edition - the first edition was published in 1819. Paul Allen (1775 - 1826) was an American editor, poet, and historian. Born in Providence, Rhode Island, he studied at Brown University and graduated in 1793, then relocated to Philadelphia, where he served as editor for several newspapers and edited a two-volume history of the Lewis and Clark expedition. He later moved to Baltimore, where he served as editor of two other newspapers and joined the Delphian Club, where he earned the playful name of Solomon Fitz Quizz and the title of Professor of Loblology, which was defined as "the science of endeavoring to do that which is impossible.” He published A History of the American Revolution in 1819, but relied on fellow Delphians John Neal and Tobias Watkins to write everything but the preface in order to get the first edition out in time to satisfy the subscribers; unfortunately Paul Allen’s name is on the title and Neal and Watkins were not given credit in writing it. See Sabin 854. The books are 8vo. and measure 8 1/2 x 5 1/4 in. wide, the bindings are tight, with faded gilt, light rubbing on the boards, a chip on the crown and a slightly bowed back board on Volume I, and light browning and occasional offset. It is still difficult to find a complete set of this work, whether it was published in 1819 or 1822; we’ve found only one first edition set and no second edition sets available online; you have to go to Special Collections around the country to find the title listed anywhere else, according to WorldCat. #1638 #21
