Hiram Harold Green was born in Paris, New York in 1865. He began his art studies in Buffalo, receiving an award for excellence from the Albright Art Academy in 1898.  He continued in New York City at the Art Students League, studying with Henry Siddons Mowbroy, Kenyon Cox, and Frederic Bridgman. In 1905 he settled in Fort Erie, Ontario, continuing to produce art for Buffalo newspapers while focusing on Canadian commercial art companies. He became known for straddling the Canadian-American line as a painter, illustrator, and etcher, especially noted for his birds-eye views of Niagara Falls. During World War I he contributed some patriotic posters for Liberty Loan for the United States government, and although he primarily created vibrant impressionist landscapes his portraits were soft and ethereal, often monocolor, which came to dominate many of his later works. For the Santa Fe Railroad he did paintings that include The Apache Trail and The Grand Canyon, and he also made pictorial maps for the Southern Pacific Railroad. He traveled extensively across the country on his assignments, and made so many trips between Buffalo and Fort Erie that he became an early champion of a bridge connecting the towns. He passed away in 1930, destitute and practically forgotten after the Great Depression.
